From the SPIE Newsroom

A selection of current articles from SPIE's online technical and news magazine.

Antennas to collect nearly every single photon from an emitter

Planar antennas have achieved near-unity collection of single photons, which may open many applications in opto-electronics, quantum optics, spectroscopy, imaging, and metrology. 30 January 2012

Read another article by Kwang-Geol Lee here: Surface plasmon polariton detection discriminating polarization-dependent image dipole effects.

Clearing space debris with lasers

Lasers and telescopes now on the drawing board can slow pieces of loose material encircling Earth so that they re-enter the atmosphere. 20 January 2012

Read a related article: Development of lightweight, stiff, stable, replicated glass mirrors for the Cornell Caltech Atacama Telescope (CCAT).

How to effectively evaluate a direct laser lithography system

Measurement uncertainty quantifies performance-related doubt and evaluates the reliability of a direct laser lithography system. 20 January 2012

Read papers from Korea Basic Science Institute researchers on the SPIE Digital Library.

Announcements

  • "More Like This" feature launched: Every article now includes links to similar articles and related patents to make finding like content easier and faster.

  • Launched in January 2011, the Journal of Photonics for Energy (JPE), edited by Zakya Kafafi, focuses on applications of photonics for renewable energy harvesting, conversion, storage, distribution, monitoring, consumption, and efficient usage. JPE articles are freely available through December 2011. Members of SPIE may select JPE as their member-benefit journal or as an additional journal at a low subscription price. If you are not a member, encourage your library to subscribe.

  • The SPIE Digital Library has surpassed 325,000 technical papers and 152 eBooks. Approximately 18,000 new papers and 20 new eBooks are planned for 2012.
