Abstract
Among all the acoustic parameters of a biological tissue, the attenuation is an indicator sensitive to the pathology of an organ. Considering the basic non stationary properties of the ultrasonic signal caused by the filtering effect of the biological medium as well as by diffraction phenomena, a time-frequency representation of the signal, such as the short time Fourier analysis, is needed. The use of indicators such as the centroid of the running power spectrum allows then to evaluate the attenuation, at a local scale. Other algorithms based on the A line intensity measurements in selected frequency bands provide also the attenuation as well as information on the statistical properties of the medium. It will be shown that the effect of the system (diffraction and transducer acoustoelectric response) can be partially deconvolved.
