Image parallel architecture is defined as SIMD machines with bit-serial processors. An important class of operations in image processing are neighborhood operations. The so called distributed processor topology supported by fast direct data paths and an efficient control unit is presented as the best possible solution for the neighborhood access problem. Table look-up is another feature that should be provided each processor to enhance histogramming, feature counts, arbitrary gray-scale transforms, logic operations etc. The ideas presented are only a part of a more complete study of an image parallel processor architecture.
