Abstract
Many types of multichannel systems, such as time-, wavelength-, space-, and code-division-multiplexed systems, are discussed in this paper. There have been enormous research strides over the past several years, and some of the more important advances are mentioned. Due to the overview nature of this paper, the main body will discuss general concepts and main issues whereas specific systems and trends will only be mentioned briefly near the end. This approach for the written paper will complement the oral presentation which will focus on the exciting and emerging "hot" topics in the general area of Multichannel Optical Communication Systems.
