Abstract
A car assembly plant is a large and complex system. Many thousands of tasks must be performed correctly in appropriate sequence if the plant is to achieve its objective of producing correctly assembled vehicles at the design rate. Consequently the design, construction, and running of such plants presents formidable management problems. The source of many of these problems is the interdependence of the numerous operations that must be carried out in the process of building a car. This paper describes CADAVER (Car Assembly line Dependency and VERification), a prototype system developed at CMI which is intended to assist plant designers and managers to understand and manipulate the interdependency relationships which exist between tasks carried out in the plant.
