Abstract
Currently, holographic waveguide combiner has been widely used for the augmented reality (AR) and head-up display (HUD) applications because it takes advantage of pupil expansion to increase the size of eye-box without interfering with system’s field of view (FOV). Nevertheless, most of the waveguide substrates are restricted to the flat surface. Indeed, flat geometry is able to avoid unwanted optical power exerting on the image when it propagates inside waveguide, however it lacks the aesthetic perception to the viewer and compatibility to the wearable Near-to-eye Display (NED) applications since none of the glasses or windshield is flat. Here, we propose a 2-D curved holographic waveguide that utilizes the holographic optical element with purposely added optical power to compensate the aberration introduced by the curved geometry. Pupil expansion is achieved by manipulating image have multiple interactions with out-couplers to increase the size of eye-box. Both raytracing model and physical demonstrator will be discussed.
