Abstract
Spatial and polarization dependence of the beam diffracted by a transient phase grating induced in a transparent glass enables, for the first time, evidence of a fifth order nonlinear process. Discrimination between direct high order phenomena and cascade contributions due to lower nonlinearities is discussed in view of an anharmonic oscillator model expanded up to sixth order.
