Abstract
CISDI’s continuous casting team has modernized slab caster 1 at Baosteel Meishan Steel in China’s Jiangsu Province. The old caster 1 produced mainly low carbon steels and its annual production capacity was less than 600,000 tonnes. The rebuild enables it to produce high-end steels – fine-blanking, pickling and high-strength structural grades. Its annual production capacity achieves 2.20 million tonnes. The slabs show a distinctly improved quality, featuring an 80 percent decrease of corner crack’s incidence, a 14.6 percent optimization of inner crack’s rating, a 20.4 percent optimization of triangular crack’s rating, and a 11.2 percent optimization of inner segregation MAN rating. The transformed slab caster works at a stable casting speed of 1.8 meters per minute for low-carbon steel production. This paper elaborates CISDI team’s efforts in and contributions to the slab caster’s transformation.
