Abstract
EMFF (Electromagnetic Formation Flying) is a novel concept of controlling magnetic moments to create interaction electromagnetic forces and torques between different satellites in a formation which enables the life-span of the mission independent of the fuel available on board. This great advantage comes at the cost of coupled and nonlinear translational dynamics of the relative motions, especially for multisatellites formation. The control for EMFF becomes a very challenging problem because the translational dynamic of each satellite is coupled to that of every other satellite in the formation since changing the magnetic moment strength on one satellite affects every other satellite in the formation with a non-zero magnetic dipole. This paper presents a consistency control law for EMFF that enables formation reconfiguration and maintenance with electromagnetic force, at the same time avoids any potential collision. Closedloop numerical simulation shows the feasibility and reliability of the control scheme described for EMFF.
