Abstract
The use of contextual information has been shown to improve the accuracy of text recognition. Methods for describing the graphical and textual contexts inherent in forms are presented. Graphical context derived from an empty form is used for improved segmentation. Since fields on forms often have a very limited number of acceptable responses (ie. sex marital status etc. ) context is also used to limit the scope of the classifier based on field type location or content. Fields on forms also exhibit known spatial interrelationships as well as contextual inter-dependencies which provide a natural set of mutual constraints for field-specific classifiers.
