Abstract
This paper reviews the development of the self electro-optic effect device (SEED) technology based on quantum well diodes. Working as optical switches, arrays of SEEDs utilize the large space-bandwidth product of free-space optics to enable optical information processing systems for applications which can benefit from massive connectivity and parallel processing architectures.
