Abstract
This paper discusses post-flight ground processing algorithms for removal of background in the Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) Spatial Infrared Imaging Telescope (SPIRIT III) scanning infrared radiometer data. The algorithms presented are linear and non-liner techniques for estimation and subtraction of expected backgrounds for theater missile defense scenarios. The impacts to object detection and amplitude estimation are addressed for each background filter as a part of the filter trade studies. This effort is funded under the MSX Theater and Midcourse Cooperative Target Experiments task on the Systems Engineering and Technical Assistance Contract with the U.S. Army Space and Strategic Defense Command.
