Abstract
Spectral dependencies of Verdet coefficient (V) of undoped Bi12SiO20 (BSO) and doped with Fe and Cr BSO crystals are studied. It is established that Cr and Fe change V in BSO in the spectral range 440-700 nm. It is found that for doped crystals the Faraday rotation angle is not a single-valued function versus the magnetic filed. The magnetic field scanning causes deep hollows in the light power. This effect is strong at high coherent light and is related to the effectively excitation of Zeeman split electron levels. The same effect is observed for undoped BSO crystal, but below 530 nm. Therefore, it is expedient to use undoped BSO crystal and operate in 600-700 nm spectral range, where light sources are suitable for fiber-optic application. A construction of magnetic field sensor head is presented. The achieved accuracy of this element is 10-5 T, with a variation of the output signal within 2 percent over the temperature range 10-40 degrees C.
