Abstract
Controlling dissipation in electronic devices is one of the major challenges in modern electronics and spintronics. There is also a parallel research direction to understand the thermodynamics of quantum systems, dubbed quantum thermodynamics, focusing on how heat engines or the statistical mechanics concept of Maxwell's demon, would translate into the quantum domain. Implementing a Maxwell's demon is attractive from a spintronics point of view, as it offers the possibility to control and even reverse dissipation in a device as long as another resource, namely demon's memory, is being consumed. In this talk, I will propose and theoretically investigate a novel spintronics device: a Maxwell's demon implementation based on the spin-momentum locking property of topological insulators. Available nuclear spins of the material acts as a memory resource. I will show how in this device, the dynamically polarized nuclear spins can convert ambient heat into electrical energy, thus reversing dissipation. I will then demonstrate the breakthrough property of this device; it can reach the Landauer's limit i.e an energy $k_B Tln2$ per polarized nuclear spin can be extracted in the form of electrical work. Next, I will focus on the high voltage limit and show that the current-voltage characteristics approach that of an ideal memristor. I will conclude by giving an overview of the current experimental progress towards implementation of this device.
