The past several decades have witnessed major advances in high-power lasers. The 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics awarded for Chirped-Pulse Amplification recognized the revolution underway in high-power lasers. The development in both peak- and average-power lasers has been motivated by the many applications in science, national security, and industry that such lasers enable. In this presentation, applications including laser accelerators, fusion and high-energy-density research,and directed-energy weapons that motivate their development and the status and a vision of the future of high-power lasers will be discussed.
