Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases are prevailing the country, and the pregnant population is critically vulnerable considering maternal and fetal health. Very limited data exist to account for this population’s nutrient intakes such as vitamin D and their cardiovascular health. To ascertain the relationship between vitamin D intake from diet and supplement with cardiovascular diseases among pregnant US women, a cross-sectional analysis was conducted on the sample of 404 pregnant individuals from the 2007–2020 March National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Exploratory data analysis is conducted on participants’ demographics, vitamin D intakes, and cardiovascular health status. Pearson correlation coefficient, distance correlation and maximal information coefficient are calculated in python and evaluated to determine the associations between the daily vitamin D intakes from diet and supplements and total cholesterol level and body mass index separately. It is observed that the subgroup of the pregnant females with age from 20 to 44 exhibits discrepancies in age, race, education level, and income to poverty ratio compared to the general groups. While the pregnant women tend to have a lower vitamin D intake through supplements and a higher total cholesterol level and BMI, the associations could be scarcely established. Distance correlation and maximal information coefficients are also used to detect non-linear correlation yet are too small to conclude any dependence. More research is needed to address pregnant women’s cardiovascular health and the implication of a healthy diet and dietary supplementation in terms of micronutrient intakes.
