Abstract
Ocean wave numerical forecasting is the most important tool for marine environmental forecasting, oceanic disaster prevention, and alleviation. However, the conventional latitude-longitude grid global wave model cannot cover the entire Arctic Ocean. It is limited by two factors: the first is the diminishing longitude grid length towards the Pole, which exerts a server restriction on the time steps of finite-difference schemes for the Courant–Friedrichs–Lewy (CFL) stability criterion; the second is the polar singularity of the spherical coordinate. Nowadays, a new ocean wave numerical operational forecasting system is requested, including global coverage with high resolution and detailed information in key regions. To meet the above requirements, this research establishes the multi-resolution global ocean wave numerical forecasting system. Based on the knowledge about the Spherical Multiple-Cell (SMC), three levels (6 km, 12 km, and 25 km) are used in the resolution of this system, which could extend the model domain to the North Pole without reducing the time steps. After a series of data analysis, optimization, and testing, the operational efficiency and stability are improved, and the ocean wave forecasting result is also enhanced by increasing the model performance and speedup.
