Abstract
In the big data era, opportunities and challenges run in parallel for college English learning. Relevant stakeholders are expected to adapt to the new trends in learning resources, contents, tools and approaches. The Data-Driven Learning (DDL) model, first proposed by Tim Johns and Philip King in the 1990s, is gaining new momentum with deep integration of information technologies and education. Under the DDL model, corpus software, with their rich and authentic language material, fast and efficient retrieval capability, can be the game-changer in empowering English reading. Using the corpus software AntConc, this study builds a corpus based on contemporary American writer Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl and intends to investigate how the corpus can be most effectively applied in teaching reading to English-as-a-Foreign-Language (EFL) learners. It is found that the fiction-based corpus can be a powerful platform for interpreting literature, learning language and culture, and enhancing critical thinking. Teaching reading with the empowerment of the self-built corpus caters well to the trend of exploration-based and student-centered English learning, producing more learning outcomes much beyond what traditional reading class can offer. However, in such corpus-based learning context, the teacher is required to serve as a qualified guide, facilitator and learning peer.
