Abstract
To fill the existing knowledge gap, we analyzed the expression patterns of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from individuals with mild and severe EV71 infections, as well as from healthy controls. Our study identified 8,541 lncRNAs that were significantly differentially expressed. We employed a comprehensive bioinformatics approach, including serial testing clustering (STC) algorithm, gene ontology analysis, pathway analysis, and lncRNA-mRNA co-expression network analysis, to explore the functional roles and regulatory networks of these lncRNAs. These analyses revealed key pathways and potential roles of lncRNAs in immune and inflammatory responses during EV71 infection. Furthermore, we identified and validated 10 crucial lncRNAs with significant expression changes among patients with mild and severe HFMD and healthy controls. Our findings provide novel insights into the involvement of lncRNAs in EV71-induced HFMD, which are essential for early diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, they offer valuable clues for understanding the mechanisms behind EV71-induced immune and inflammatory responses and the pathogenesis of inflammatory imbalance in severe EV71 infection.
