Abstract
In mechanical assembly and engineering, the integrity of fastening systems is crucial for the reliability and durability of structures and machinery. This study investigates the failure mechanisms of stainless steel self-locking bracket nuts and titanium alloy screws, which are critical junction points in various engineering applications. Through comprehensive testing and analysis, focusing on the morphological characteristics of the failed components, the research reveals that pairing stainless steel self-locking bracket nuts with blue anodized titanium alloy screws leads to pronounced galling, known as "bite death." Remarkably, the study finds that using titanium alloy screws lubricated with molybdenum disulfide significantly mitigates this adverse effect. Specific data indicate that untreated screws required torques of 2Nm, 3Nm, and 5Nm for M3, M4, and M5 sizes, respectively, while treated screws only required torques of 0.2Nm, 0.7Nm, and 0.9Nm to pass through the self-locking nuts. This investigation highlights the importance of material compatibility and lubrication in preventing fastener failure, providing essential insights for optimizing screw and nut combinations in engineering designs.
