Abstract
Image compression consists of an image data transformation followed by a data encoding. Transformation prepares the data so that the encoding will result in significant compression. The PROJECTRON algorithm is an iterative, adaptive algorithm that transforms the data by extracting optimal linear features which may be used to provide a compact representation of the image suitable for encoding. The algorithm generates features related to principal components and the Karhunen-Loeve transform. Use of the algorithm for image data compression is discussed.
