11 May 1994 Macro-driven semiautomation of routine medical imaging segmentation tasks

Abstract
We have achieved a significant decrease in time required to segment certain image types through the use of semiautomated macros. These macros reduce much of the tedium of using segmentation tools by providing an initial first pass at segmentation to be followed by final interactive segmentation by a radiologist. The macros are selected based on image type and target tissue and rely on signal characteristics inherent to the image type and tissue. Techniques such as this to reduce the time requirements for segmentation of medical images are essential for mainstream acceptance of computer-assisted segmentation tools into the clinical environment.
