Abstract
In distributed video applications, proper transmission scheduling is necessary to ensure display continuity and efficient bandwidth utilization. Many optimization algorithms exist for the transmission planning of stored VBR videos. Most of these algorithms operate under the assumption of jitter free transmissions. In practical applications, however, such an assumption may not always be true due to specific server and network conditions such as server load shifting and mobile connection handoffs. Under such conditions, video transmission would enter temporary inertia periods in which no data can be transmitted. To cope with such situations, we propose in this paper transmission planning algorithms which ensure uninterrupted client playback and smooth network traffic. We consider different jitter scenarios in practical video applications and formulate optimization problems based on these scenarios. Optimal or near optimal solutions are then presented for these problems and the effectiveness of these algorithms are tested using available VBR video traces.
