Abstract
An experimental study has been performed of the laser-induced optical birefringence in two different classes of molecular liquids: cyclic alkanes and aromatic-aliphatic ethers. The results obtained enabled the authors to calculate numerically the optical and molar Kerr constants as well as the effective optical polarizability of the molecules. The analysis of our results allowed us moreover to ascertain the predominant role of molecular orientation in the induced optical birefringence in the case of the aromatic ethers, and the existence of weak molecular interaction in the cyclic alkanes studied.
