Abstract

The brightness of the reflected sunlight from the Earth has been measured in the UV by the Solar Mesosphere Explorer (SME)¹ and by the Solar Backscatter UltraViolet experiment (SBUV)². The observed spectral radiance, Iλ, divided by the solar spectral irradiance, Fλ, is the albedo, Aλ, shown in Fig. 1 for nadir observations. The logarithm of the albedo is reasonably well fitted by a quadratic in wavelength (Ångstroms) and solar zenith angle, 0, (degrees) as shown in the figure and given by:
