Zigzag phenomenon is a problem when trying to expand Chinese characters patterns. We address the zigzag problem by proposing a new pyramid smoothing-expanding algorithm that distributes the zigzag among the expanded pattern. Compared to the conventional technique, which uses the coordinate transform with local neighborhood assignment, our algorithm is very simple. It can produce good expanding fonts and be applied successfully in desktop publishing systems.
