The degradation of large rotating cryogenic structures such as the Central Wheel Mechanism for MICADO, particularly in terms of wear and friction, has not been fully understood. This work aims to address this gap by developing computational and experimental tools to tackle these issues. By developing a numerical model and subsequently validating it with an experimental cryogenic setup, we aim to quantify the wear and the evolution of friction in some of the MICADO cryogenic rotating components.
MOSAIC is the Multi-Object Spectrograph (MOS) for the 39m Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), with unique capabilities in terms of multiplex, wavelength coverage and spectral resolution. It is a versatile multi-object spectrograph working in both the Visible and NIR domains, designed to cover the largest possible area (∼40 arcmin2) on the focal plane, and optimized to achieve the best possible signal-to-noise ratio on the faintest sources, from stars in our Galaxy to galaxies at the epoch of the reionization. In this paper we describe the main characteristics of the instrument, including its expected performance in the different observing modes. The status of the project will be briefly presented, together with the positioning of the instrument in the landscape of the ELT instrumentation. We also review the main expected scientific contributions of MOSAIC, focusing on the synergies between this instrument and other major ground-based and space facilities.
The main goal of the third iteration of the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS3) is to search for Earth-like planets over a ten-year programme. As part of this search, spectropolarimetric observations have been envisioned foreseeing the need for new ways to reduce stellar activity jitter which obscures the 10 cm/sec radial velocity signal of such planets. HARPS3 has thus been designed with an insertable polarimetric sub-unit. This sub-unit consists of two superachromatic polymer retarders, one quarter-wave and one half-wave, to separately detect all Stokes parameters of a target, as well as a polarimetric beam splitter to separate the parallel polarimetric beams by 30 mm to feed the science fibers. In this paper we report on the currently nonfunctional polarimetric sub-unit of the HARPS3 spectrograph and discuss the upgrade expected before commissioning that will fix current issues. We discuss the possible observation schedule of polarimetric observations for the Terra Hunting Experiment and the potential impacts of polarimetric observations on mitigating stellar radial velocity jitter.
We present the manufacturing and optical verification of the germanium immersed grating for the L/M band high resolution spectrograph (LMS). The LMS is one of the science subsystems of the Mid-infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph, METIS. The immersed grating has very demanding requirement specifications: <100 nm RMS transmitted Wave Front Error (WFE) after double pass, and >70% peak throughput in all orders within the 2.9-5.3 μm wavelength range over the pupil. The grating has a period of 18.2 μm, a sawtooth groove profile with 89.6 degrees apex angle and a grating area of 150mm x 60mm. The germanium immersed grating was produced by Canon’s high precision mechanical cutting technology. We present the interferometric tests that were performed in order to verify WFE and two different measurements (based on cascade laser and Fourier Transform Spectrometer, respectively) for throughput verification.
