Interferograms obtained from Fourier transform spectrometers (FTS) can be used to obtain high resolution optical spectral measurements. Accompanying high resolution spectra is the resulting large data volumes. This paper describes efforts directed at defining a predictor that will result in efficient lossless coding of interferograms. Interferograms generally contain informational redundancies that can be exploited by lossless coders. In addition, many interferograms show regions exhibiting short term periodicity. The short term periodicity is derived by taking the Fourier transform of the points preceding the desired prediction point. Prediction residuals are then losslessly coded with the Rice entropy coder. Compared with interferograms compressed with the Rice coding algorithm, the proposed predictor shows improved compression in most cases.
