The automotive industry is rapidly transforming due to the growing demand for decarbonization. Electric Vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly common, and subsequent innovations regarding vehicle lightweighting can increase vehicle efficiency and further reduce carbon footprint. Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIBs) have become the most common power source used in EVs, but LIBs host some inherent challenges, namely thermal runaway. Thermal runaway can be caused by various mechanisms including thermal, mechanical, or electrical impacts which occur during extreme operating conditions. This kind of failure can result in battery fires and explosions that are extremely difficult to extinguish and pose a significant safety risk. A self-sensing LIB enclosure that monitors the temperatures of individual battery modules and provides an early warning signal may be a viable solution to the thermal runaway safety issue. This work studies a hybrid carbon and glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composite designed to replace the traditional metal LIB enclosure, lightweighting the EV design and allowing for condition monitoring sensors to be embedded during the manufacturing process. Battery enclosures have tight space constraints which prohibit surface mounted sensors, making sensor embedment essential. Embedded sensors also have the advantage of a protective composite layer that makes the sensor system more robust during manufacturing and operating conditions. However, this composite layer under which the sensors are sealed produces a time lag in detecting a temperature change within the battery enclosure. This time delay would reduce the efficacy of an early warning system. The purpose of this study is to lay the groundwork for a self-sensing condition monitoring LIB enclosure and characterize the composite enclosure’s temperature response at different layers. A theoretical design of said system is detailed, and a prototype enclosure sample instrumented with temperature sensors is fabricated. Experiments are performed to measure the temperature response of the self-sensing composite prototype when exposed to realistic thermal runaway conditions. This is accomplished through a novel experimental test set up that imposes a unidirectional heat transfer condition by exposing the composite sample to oven temperatures on the top surface and ambient temperatures on the bottom surface. A computational model is developed to predict the composite’s thermal response during different LIB failure temperatures. This finite element transient heat transfer simulation is tuned using initial experimental results and validated by subsequent thermal tests. This study produces a high accuracy thermal model which can be used to provide design optimization information, like the ideal placement of sensors, and predict the thermal response of a composite enclosure when exposed to different thermal loading conditions. The thermal simulation could also be utilized in future works to develop a temperature inference model which could predict LIB health from embedded sensor measurements. This work details the novel experiments and derived finite element model that characterize a potential LIB management system integrated within a self-sensing composite battery enclosure.

Structural condition assessment of highway bridges is traditionally performed by visual inspections or nondestructive evaluation techniques, which are either slow, unreliable or detects only local flaws. Instrumentation of bridges with accelerometers and other sensors, however, can provide real-time data useful for monitoring the global structural conditions of the bridges due to ambient and forced excitations. Traditionally, videos are used for surveillance purposes and environmental monitoring of civil structures. In this paper the potential for the utilization of videos in an integrated structural health monitoring of highway bridges beyond the mentioned traditional applications are reported. Results obtained from the field tests, which were carried out on a short-span instrumented bridge, are presented. Videos of vehicles passing by, together with signals from laser beam sensors placed on the side of the bridge, were captured, and synchronized with data recordings from the accelerometers. For short-span highway bridges, vibration is predominantly due to traffic excitation. A stochastic model of traffic excitation on bridges is developed assuming that vehicles traversing a bridge (modeled as an elastic beam) form a sequence of Poisson process moving forces and that the contact force of a vehicle on the bridge deck can be converted to equivalent dynamic loads at the nodes of the beam elements. Basic information of vehicle types, arrival times and speeds are extracted from the video images to develop a physics-based simulation model of the traffic excitation. This modeling approach aims at circumventing a difficulty in the system identification of bridge structural parameters. Current practice of system identification of bridge parameters is often based on the measured response (or system output) only, and knowledge of the input (traffic excitation) is either unknown or assumed, making it difficult to obtain an accurate assessment of the state of the bridge structures. The effectiveness and viability of this video-assisted approach are demonstrated by the field results. Finally, a technique on how to integrate the weights of vehicles in the image processing algorithm is proposed.

Our model reveals that traffic excitation on bridges is spatially correlated, an important feature that is usually incorrectly ignored in most output-only methods. A recursive Bayesian filtering is formulated to monitor the evolution of the state of the bridge. The effectiveness and viability of this video-assisted approach are demonstrated by the field results.

Damage to highway systems from recent earthquakes has emphasized the need for pre-event damage assessment of the existing highway systems so that the effective measures can be taken to reduce the loss from the future earthquake. In this paper, a Monte Carlo technique is presented which can be effectively used to simulate the states of bridge as well as highway network damage. With the aid of damage data, collected after the 1994 Northridge earthquake, the fragility curves are developed for each bridge on a limited access expressway network in Los Angeles County and Orange County in California, and classified in accordance with such attributes as whether it is a single span or multiple span, how much it is skewed and the condition of soil on which it is constructed. Monte Carlo simulations of states of bridge damage are performed based on these facility curves. A set of criteria and indices are then introduced, upon calibration with Northridge experience, for simulation of the damage state of each link and then the state of network damage when subjected to scenario earthquakes. The calibration is achieved by adjusting the criteria and indices by comparing the simulated states with the actual states of network damage under the Northridge earthquake. Computational time for one realization (simulation) of states of network damage is of the order of a few seconds. Therefore, the Monte Carlo simulation-based method of network damage assessment presented here can provide a post-earthquake response decision support system for highway networks; Since the purpose of the present study is to demonstrate the efficacy of the Monte Carlo simulation method, numerical examples are performed under the conditions that only bridges are seismically vulnerable, bridge fragility curves are available, and knowledge of the state of network damage suffices for government agencies and emergency response profession to make decisions as to how search/rescue/medical teams and emergency repair crews can be dispatched and how food, potable water and other emergency supplies can be transported by an optimal use of the remaining network capacity. In this study, the spatial distribution of ground motion intensity is estimated deterministically in terms of peak ground acceleration (PGA). The spatial variation of PGA due to modeling and other sources of uncertainty is expected to have some effect on the final result. This issue is currently under study.
