Aerodynamic performance and interaction effects of swirl recovery vanes for ducted propeller

To improve the aerodynamic performance of ducted propeller, the circumferential kinetic energy of the propeller is recycled by introducing swirl recovery vanes (SRVs) downstream of the blade to generate extra thrust and improve the propulsion efficiency. In this paper, the influence mechanism of duct propeller with SRVs are studied by using high-fidelity CFD method in hovering condition, the relationship between SRV design parameters and propulsion efficiency improvement is illustrated from SRVs axial position and number of SRVs. The research shows that SRVs have coupled flow interference with the blade and duct, the thrust and power consumed by the blade are reduced, but the thrust generated by the SRVs makes up for this loss, while the SRVs as a fixed component do not consume power, resulting in a 5.08% increase in propulsion efficiency, and the highest propulsion efficiency when the SRVs are located at 47% of the duct chord length, the best number of SRVs is six. In addition, the SRVs generates a torque in the opposite direction of the propeller counter-torque, reducing the ducted propeller counter-torque by 63.1%.
