When an object is displaced horizontally in depth relative to an observer, this deviation from the center of the object is called "slant". The vertical boundaries of the object are located in depth in terms of this slant orientation of the object to the observer. As the position of an object in space determines the projected shape of the figure to an observer, it is only natural to find that the judg-ment of slant of an object is a problem whose historical anteced-ents originated with the general subject of 'shape constancy' in psychology.
