Abstract
The effect of oil-droplet spheres in photoreceptor cells of some vertebrates is evaluated from model experiments with microwaves (λ =5 mm), using correspondingly enlarged structures of foam materials. Directivity and sensitivity of rods and cones should be enhanced by the sphere-lenses. Wave-optics calculation of excitation of the waveguide modes in the dielectric receptor-cells confirms the experimental results.
