A light field 3D display, which reconstructs a true 3D scene by reproducing the directional samples of the light rays apparently emitted by the 3D scene and viewed from slight different viewing points within a viewing window, is one of the few display architecture that can be implemented into a compact head-mounted form. A head-mounted 3D light field display (LF-HMD) is potentially capable of rendering correct or nearly correct focus cues and therefore addressing the well-known vergence-accommodation conflict problem in conventional stereoscopic displays for virtual and augmented reality applications. Recent years, efforts have been made to engineering this type of displays. In this presentation, we will review the recent progress in developing this display method and discuss existing challenges and opportunities.
