Abstract
Robots are superior to human workers in the manufacturing industry, but cannot fully supplant humans for several reasons. It is no coincidence that industrial robots are mostly robotic arms on assembly lines. This article analyzes why robots are playing a more and more important role in manufacturing, and whether soft robotics are able to make amendments to the flaws of rigid robotics, to achieve a higher level of automation. The robots are more precise, more productive, and able to reduce the risk of human injury. But at the same time, they may be too large or too small for the product, or unable to carry out duties due to design constraints. Soft robots possess a new level of adaptability and flexibility, thanks to biomimicry, but current development of soft robotics is slow because of the difficulty in kinematic control. However, this article only discusses its application, namely in the production of communication modules, aircraft assembly and vehicle inspection, assuming kinematic control is feasible in the future. And it is concluded that soft robotics could be applicable in manufacturing industries to make amendments of robotic arms’ drawbacks, but it takes time before soft robotic can be mass-produced.
