Abstract
In fog conditions, reduced visibility poses a significant risk for traffic accidents. Low-position road lighting can effectively enhance visibility during dense fog, thus improving traffic safety. This paper explores the relationship between lowposition road light’s horizontal projection angle and target visibility under simulated foggy conditions. Experimental results indicated that utilizing a smaller horizontal projection angle, where the light directly illuminates the target object from the front, results in higher object brightness, greater contrast with the background, and increased visible surface area, leading to improved visibility. Conversely, employing lateral lighting with a 90-degree horizontal projection angle, while illuminating the peripheral portions of the target object, reduced the visible surface area, resulting in lower visibility due to the reduced visual energy. The results could provide technical references for road lighting in foggy areas.
