Abstract
One of the fundamental applications of integrated optics is the development of miniature optical gyros for navigation and airborne vehicle control systems. The integrated optical ring passive resonator (RPR) was proposed as one of the possible realizations of a sensitive element for such gyros. It presents a closed-loop channel waveguide made on a substrate of optical quality with which two Y-splitters are optically and symmetrically connected. The first splitter is connected in a homogeneous section with the external radiation source and serves for excitation in the closed-loop wave-guide for the two light waves, one of which propagates in clockwise direction and the other in counterclockwise direction. The second Y-splitter extracts some part of circulating radiations out of the closed-loop waveguide circuit and directs it to the photodetector, detecting the intensity of a superpositioned field.
