Abstract
Surface effects induced by small laser impacts on a 55C1 steel were investigated in terms of the compressive residual stresses, the surface geometries and the work hardenings generated by the process. it was demonstrated that laser shock processing with 1-2 mm spot-size range could provide at least as beneficial surface effects as larger ones but limited to about 0.8 mm in depth where as large impacts affected more than 1.2 mm at the same power densities. This latter point was ascribed to differences in the chock propagation mode: shock decay was shown to occur earlier in the case of small impacts because of 2D attenuations as confirmed by Lagrangian simulations.
