Abstract
In this paper, we present a new Internet multicast routing architecture and protocol called Adaptive Source and CORe based multicasT (ASCORT). ASCORT is designed with the objective of flexibly balancing the scalability and end-to- end performance. Unlike the core-based approach, all the distributions trees in ASCORT are source-specific. As a result, ASCORT has a better end-to-end performance than the core-based approach by being adaptive to the sources' location distributions. On the other hand, the tree nodes are not required to keep routing states for all the sources, thus resulting in a better scalability performance than the source-specific approach. In this paper we will provide an overview of ASCORT's approach and two protocols to convert a forest of independent source-specific trees to a forest of ASCORT source-specific distribution trees. We will also present preliminary simulation result to compare ASCORT's performance with the core-based and source-specific approaches.
