27 July 1999 Real-time contrasted target detection for IR imagery based on a multiscale top hat filter

Abstract
This paper presents a real-time detection algorithm for contrasted targets (bright and dark) of different sizes in infrared imagery. We developed a real-time multi-scale top hat filters which allows us to detect very low contrast bright and dark regions of five different size categories simultaneously: 2x2 - 4x4 pixels, 4x4 - 8x8 pixels, 8x8 - 16x16 pixels, 16x16 - 32x32 pixels and 32x32 - 64x64 pixels. The detected regions are matched over time and filtered using the characteristics of expected targets, like contrast, size and their vehicle dynamics. We present the details of this approach including its real-time implementation and its role in our Automated Target Detection and Tracking system.
