15 October 1999 Moisture measurement of timber using microwave attenuation at two frequencies

Abstract
This paper describes a new method for measuring moisture content distribution of timber using only attenuation at two microwave frequencies. The experiment showed that the setup of transmission type operating at 9 and 12 GHz measured moisture contents of some timbers of different kinds having various thickness and density without any knowledge about the thickness and the density. Four timbers of three species having different thickness and density were measured by the method. The result showed that the setup based on the method measured samples with the timbers mentioned above. The measurable range of moisture content was below 20% in dry basis and the mean value of error was 2.3%, and the maximum error was 7.7% using a calibration curve expressed with a third polynomial equation.
