Ryan K. Roeder earned B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Engineering from Purdue University in 1994 and 1999, respectively, and then completed a two year post-doctoral research appointment in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Indiana University Medical Center. Ryan is currently a Professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and Bioengineering Graduate Program at the University of Notre Dame, where he was initially appointed in 2001. His research interests broadly span biomaterials, including nanoparticles for imaging probes and drug delivery and scaffolds for regenerating tissues; biomechanics, including the mechanobiology and micromechanics of musculoskeletal tissues; and biomedical imaging, including photon-counting spectral computed tomography. Recent research has focused on targeted nanoparticle probes for contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT). Laboratory expertise includes nanoparticle synthesis, surface functionalization, and characterization; in vitro and in vivo models for targeted delivery, especially in cancer; and various CT imaging techniques (contrast-enhanced, dual-energy, spectral). Ryan has trained 3 postdocs and 17 doctoral students who have subsequently achieved their own success in research positions at universities, research hospitals, private research institutes, and industry. Ryan’s research has been supported by federal agencies (e.g., NIH, NSF, CDMRP PRMRP), industrial sponsors, and private foundations, as well as by a number of local, regional and international collaborations.
