Prof. Yuliya Semenova received her ME degree in Electronic Engineering from Lviv Polytechnic National University, Ukraine, in 1992 and her Ph.D. degree in Physics of Liquid Crystals from the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, Kyiv, Ukraine, in 1999. Between 1997 and 2001 she worked as a researcher at the Faculty of Electrophysics at the Lviv Polytechnic National University. Since 2001 she has been with the School of Electronic and Communications Engineering at Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland. She is a lecturer and senior researcher in the Photonics Research Centre. Her research interests include liquid crystals, photonics and fiber optic sensing with the spacific focus on:
-Novel demodulation systems for optical fibre sensors;
-Liquid crystal based tunable devices for fibre-optic networks;
-Liquid crystal fibre optic sensors of electric and magnetic fields and electrical current;
-Novel types of fibre optic sensors, such as e.g. singlemode-multimode-singlemode and photonic crystal fibre based filters and sensors;
-Disposable optical fiber temperature sensors;
-Smart sensors for engineering structures (embedding of fibre optic sensors in composite materials);
-Micro- and nano- fibre whispering-gallery mode resonators for bio-] and chemical sensing.
She has published over 80 peer-reviewed journal publications, more than 70 presentations at international conferences and 2 book chapters in these areas.
